Brighten Up Dull Skin
The skin is a very sensitive part of the body, and a number of issues can affect its overall appearance and health. As we grow older our skin also changes, and constant exposure to UV light, strong winds, cold temperatures and air born chemicals can soon take their toll on the skin, causing it to appear tired and dull.
However the skin does respond well to a bit of pampering and there are plenty of ways in which you can support your skin and boost your overall skin health, creating a more natural radiant appearance.
Exfoliation
The skin has a complex structure made up of many different layers, and to help your skin shed efficiently you need to exfoliate at least 2 to 3 times a week. Exfoliating doesn’t mean scrubbing the skin until it is red raw, but instead gently brushing the skin with either a slightly abrasive paste (you can buy special body scrubs in supermarkets and chemists) or a natural loafer or brush, which will help to remove any stubborn dirt and grime and also help to loosen any dry or dead skin. You can make your own body scrub at home by mixing up a paste of two handfuls of fine oatmeal, a tablespoon of fresh milk and a teaspoon of caster sugar. Mix this up in a bowl and then gentle rub all over the body (taking special care to be gentle on the face) and then wash off with warm water thoroughly and pat dry.
Nourishing
It takes a lot of vitamins and minerals to support our skin, and it can be difficult to get all of the nutrients we need from our diet alone, even if we eat healthily. It can be very easy for skin to get dry and dehydrated so make sure you drink plenty of water and spend some time every day nourishing the skin by applying a good moisturiser. Some areas of your skin such as your hands and feet may require a more intensive moisturiser to combat excessive dryness, and it is best to apply these at night before you go to bed so that they don’t rub off before they can get to work. Face masks are also a good way to cleanse and deeply moisturise the face, and if you have dry skin you can make up a natural face mask of a teaspoon of honey and half a fresh mashed avocado, which you can mix together to form a slightly sticky paste, which you can then apply to your face (avoiding the sensitive eye, nose and mouth areas) for 5 minutes before washing off in plenty of warm water.
