How to Tell the Good Shoes from Junk
Are you spending a fortune buying expensive, designer label shoes? Just because these shoes cost a fortune, it doesn’t mean they are made any better than other, cheaper shoes. In fact, many times designer label shoes wear out more quickly than others. How do you tell the good shoes apart from the junk? How can you tell if a pair of shoes is even right for you? Most of us have dozens or even hundreds of pairs collecting dust in our (and our poor husband’s) closet. Here are a few tips to help you pick out the best shoes for your money, letting you shop with buyer confidence.
Don’t go at it alone. Most women stop wearing the shoes they have because primarily because of size issues. Have a salesperson at the store take precise measurements of your foot. All shoemakers are a little different when it comes to size and having a professional that knows what labels tend to run tight or loose is very helpful in picking a pair that fits well. They can also tell you typically how long a particular brand of shoe lasts.
Remember to include the size of your nylons and socks when buying shoes. If you are buying a nice pair of running shoes, it doesn’t make sense to buy a nice pair of shoes only to come home and find they don’t fit. If the shoes were on sale or clearance, you may not be able to return them.
Walk around for a bit in the shoes. Many of us simply buy shoes on impulse and really don’t think about how comfortable the shoes really are. For most of us, decisions on shoes tend to be based on how they look with various outfits. Typically you are going to be walking more than a few steps in your new shoes so taking a few quick steps isn’t going to give you an accurate guess on how they’re going to feel after a few hours. Walk around the store and really get a feel for how they really fit.
To make sure your shoes are made well and will last a long time, make sure that the stitching is secure and not fraying anywhere. Also, check the shoe’s interior and make sure it’s lined from top to bottom. This ensures that the leather or other material won’t be absorbing moisture.
There are plenty of junk shoes on the market these days. Make sure that you are taking a second look at the shoes you buy. Your feet, pocketbook AND your husband will thank you!
