Congratulations! You and your daughter both have been waiting for this day for years and we know it will go exactly how you want it to…right? Being the mother of the bride however isn’t as easy of a role as you might expect.  Not only is your daughter going to rely on you more than ever, but the responsibilities of this job have drastically changed over the years. Many mothers are clueless as to what they are supposed to do, other than float the bill that that is! Although it’s perfectly fine to want to give your daughter the absolute best day of her life, you’ll need to remember that this is her day and not yours. Ideas and plans that you think are just invaluable, may be unimportant to your little girl. Here is a short list of jobs that the mother of the bride is traditionally responsible for.

More than anything else your main job until the preacher asks your new son-in-law to kiss his bride is to simply support your daughter’s decisions. Again it is her day and you need to make sure everything gets done the way she wants it to. Traditionally the mother of the bride was responsible for planning, hosting (as well as paying) for the entire wedding. Nowadays however, some ceremonies aren’t as traditional. Make sure you have along discussion with your daughter and find out exactly what she wants from you.

It’s your job to help your daughter find the wedding dress of her dreams and to coordinate with the bridesmaids as well for their attire.  

Keep an eye out for great locations. Hopefully your daughter has given you at least 6 months to a year to plan this event. Most wedding locations have waiting lists at least this long.

If you haven’t already met the parents of your daughters finance’s then its time to do so now. Who knows they may even offer to take some of the financial load off your shoulders.

Make sure to have a long talk with the happy couple and set boundaries as far as what you are paying for and what they will need to take care of on their own. Although some parents offer to float the bill for the entire event, weddings are very expensive and a lot of parents will need to share the load.

There are several responsibilities that the mother of the bride must take care of to make sure her daughter’s wedding goes smoothly. Make sure you have a very clear discussion with your daughter as soon she’s accepted her proposal so that there are no surprises later down the line. Do your best to accommodate her needs, remember your little girl is counting on you to make this day as perfect as possible.
